Arabic Coffee Etiquette in Ramadan: How to Serve Gahwa After Iftar and in the Majlis
How do you serve Arabic coffee in Ramadan? After iftar, offer dates first, then gahwa. Hold the dallah in your left hand and the finjan in your right, serve the eldest or most important guest first (or start from the right of the majlis), and pour only a quarter to half of the cup. Keep refilling until the guest gently shakes the cup, which means “enough”.
In Ramadan, Arabic coffee moves to the centre of the evening. It is poured after iftar, in the majlis after taraweeh and at late-night gatherings with family and neighbours. The customs around it are old and shared across the Gulf: the UNESCO list of intangible heritage records Arabic coffee as “a symbol of generosity” for the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar, later joined by Jordan.1 This guide covers when to serve it in Ramadan, the etiquette for hosts and guests, and how much to prepare.

When Is Arabic Coffee Served in Ramadan?
- After breaking the fast: iftar starts with water and dates. Gahwa follows, usually once the first plates are done, or after the maghrib prayer.
- In the evening majlis: after taraweeh, coffee is poured again for visitors, together with karak or tea.
- At late gatherings: in many Gulf homes, families and neighbours meet late in the evening, and the dallah stays warm all night.
- Less at suhoor: coffee and tea increase fluid loss, so most people keep them for after iftar. See caffeine in Ramadan for timing.
How to Serve Arabic Coffee: Etiquette for Hosts
- Dates first. Dates are served with the coffee. The dates sweeten the mouth and the coffee follows.3
- Dallah in the left hand, finjan in the right. Coffee is poured and offered with the right hand, even by left-handed servers.23
- Serve the eldest or most important guest first. Older people and guests come first. If there is no clear order, start from the right side of the majlis and move to the right.13
- Pour a little. Fill a quarter to about half of the finjan. A full cup can suggest you want the guest to leave.23
- Stay attentive. The server stands, watches the cups and refills without being asked, until a guest shakes the cup.
Etiquette for Guests
- Take and return the finjan with your right hand.
- Accept at least one cup. Declining coffee altogether can be read as a sign that something is wrong.3
- When you have had enough, gently shake the empty cup before handing it back.1
- Drink while it is hot and enjoy the conversation between cups.
How Many Cups Should You Drink?
Abu Dhabi Culture describes drinking at least one cup and no more than three.2 In practice, many hosts do not count at all, and the server keeps pouring until you shake the cup.3 One to three small cups is a safe and polite rule in any majlis.
Do and Avoid
| Do | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Serve dates with the coffee | Serving coffee with sugar by default |
| Pour and offer with the right hand | Using the left hand to offer the cup |
| Fill a quarter to half of the finjan | Filling the cup to the top |
| Start with the eldest or the guest of honour | Serving yourself first |
| Shake the cup when you have had enough | Leaving the cup still if you want no more |

How Much Arabic Coffee to Prepare for Guests
A common starting point is 30 g of Arabic coffee for 500 ml of water, which gives about five finjans, with one to two teaspoons of ground cardamom. Assuming three small cups per guest:
| Guests | Finjans (3 each) | Water | Arabic coffee |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 guests | 15 | 1.5 L | 90 g |
| 10 guests | 30 | 3 L | 180 g |
| 20 guests | 60 | 6 L | 360 g |
| 30 guests | 90 | 9 L | 540 g |

Sweet Drinks Beside the Coffee
Gahwa itself has no sugar, but the drinks around it often do. A glass of jallab or Vimto can carry 7 to 8 teaspoons of sugar. See our data on how much sugar is in Ramadan drinks and the full Ramadan drinks guide.
Quick Questions
Why do you shake the finjan?
Gently shaking the empty cup tells the server you have had enough. Without it, the server will keep refilling your cup.
How full should an Arabic coffee cup be?
Only a small amount: guides describe a quarter to about half of the finjan. You refill often instead of pouring a full cup.
Which hand do you use for Arabic coffee?
The right hand. The server pours and offers the cup with the right hand, and the guest takes and returns it with the right hand.
Who is served Arabic coffee first?
The eldest or most important guest. Otherwise, start from the right side of the majlis and continue to the right.
Is Arabic coffee served with sugar?
Traditionally no. It is served plain, often with cardamom, and the dates served alongside it provide the sweetness.
