Sugar-Free Matcha Latte: How to Make One at Home (and What to Look For)
Searching for a sugar-free matcha latte usually means one thing: you want the creamy, fresh café drink without the sugar. The good news is that plain matcha powder has no sugar added to it. The sugar usually comes from what is mixed in: sweetened matcha blends, flavoured syrups or sweetened creamers. This guide explains what “sugar-free” and “no added sugar” really mean on a label, how to make a no-added-sugar matcha latte at home, and what to look for in a ready-to-mix matcha latte.
Quick answer
- Plain matcha powder is ground green tea leaves, with no sugar added.
- The sugar comes from the extras: sweetened blends, syrups and sweetened creamers. Read the ingredients list.
- “No added sugar” means no sugar was added during making. Milk still has its own natural milk sugar.
- To sweeten without sugar, use a stevia-based sweetener such as Reb-M.

What “Sugar-Free” Really Means on a Matcha Latte
Labels use similar phrases that are not the same thing. “No added sugar” means that no sugar, and no sugar-based sweetener such as syrup or honey, was added to the product. It does not mean the drink has zero sugar, because milk contains lactose, a natural milk sugar. “Sugar-free” is a stronger claim, and in many countries it is tied to a strict limit on the amount of sugars. That is why Lucarise describes its matcha lattes as “no added sugar” rather than “sugar free”.
Where the Sugar in a Matcha Latte Comes From
A matcha latte only has a few ingredients, so it is easy to see where sugar enters:
- Sweetened matcha blends. Many café powders are pre-mixed with sugar, so the green drink is already sweet.
- Syrups. Vanilla, caramel or simple syrup added by the spoonful.
- Sweetened creamers and condensed milk. These add sweetness and sugar in one step.
- Flavoured or sweetened milks. Some plant milks have sugar added, so check the carton.
Pure matcha powder, with matcha as the only ingredient, has none of these. If you start from pure matcha and unsweetened milk, you control the sweetness yourself.

How to Make a No-Added-Sugar Matcha Latte at Home
- Sift 1–2 g of matcha powder (about ½–1 teaspoon) into a bowl or cup to avoid lumps.
- Add 50–60 ml of hot water at 70–80 °C, not boiling, and whisk until smooth.
- Heat or froth 150–200 ml of unsweetened milk of your choice.
- Pour the milk over the matcha and sweeten with a stevia-based sweetener, a little at a time, to taste.
- For iced: shake everything with a glass of ice cubes instead.

How to Sweeten Matcha Without Sugar
Stevia sweeteners are far sweeter than sugar by weight, so you only need a small amount, and strengths differ from brand to brand, so add a little at a time. Stevia Reb-M (rebaudioside M) is the part of the stevia leaf chosen for its clean taste with very little bitter aftertaste, which is why it suits a delicate drink like matcha. Frequently Asked Questions
Is matcha sugar free?
Pure matcha powder is ground green tea leaves, and no sugar is added to it. A matcha latte can still contain sugar from sweeteners, syrups or the milk, so always check the ingredients.
Does a Lucarise matcha latte contain sugar?
No sugar is added. Lucarise matcha lattes are sweetened with stevia Reb-M. They contain milk, which has natural milk sugar, so we say “no added sugar” rather than “sugar free”. The full ingredient list is on each product page.
Can I make it iced?
Yes. Shake one sachet with cold milk and ice, or follow the iced steps in our matcha latte guide.
What is the difference between matcha and a matcha latte mix?
Matcha powder is the tea alone. A matcha latte mix already combines matcha with milk and creamer and a sweetener in a sachet, so you only add hot or cold liquid.
